Why you lose interest the moment they like you back

The feeling collapses the week they become certain. That usually means your interest was running on uncertainty rather than on the person. Sometimes it means something else.

It has a shape you could set a watch by. 3 weeks of wanting them badly. Then one text that is warmer than the others, or a plan made for a month ahead, and the whole thing goes flat within days.

Nothing about them changed. You can usually list what you liked and confirm it is all still there. What changed is that the outcome stopped being in question.

That timing is the entire clue. If interest dies at the exact moment uncertainty dies, then interest was never really about the person.

What was actually holding your attention

Wanting somebody and pursuing an open question feel identical from the inside. Both are absorbing. Both make your phone interesting. Only one of them is about a human being.

An unresolved outcome is a very efficient engine. It gives you something to check, something to plan, something to interpret. Every ambiguous message is a small puzzle, and puzzles hold attention far better than people do.

When they choose you clearly, the puzzle is solved. The engine has no fuel. What is left is an ordinary person on an ordinary Tuesday. You read that drop in intensity as evidence that they were wrong for you.

The feeling did not tell you about them. It told you the answer was not in yet.

There is a second thing happening underneath, and it is less flattering. Their certainty hands you something to lose. Someone who might leave cannot really hurt you. Someone who has decided to stay can, and the cheapest way to remove that risk is to stop wanting them first.

The styles this shows up in

This pattern is not random and it is not rare. It clusters in 3 of the Six Dating Styles, for 3 different reasons.

The Certain runs the strongest version. You decide fast, the intensity of the deciding is the experience, and once it is settled there is nothing left to decide. You mistake the end of the deciding for the end of the feeling.

The Sentry runs the most protective version. The distance was the point. When someone closes it, the alarm you feel is not disinterest. It is the door being pushed on, and you call the alarm a lack of chemistry.

The Auditor runs the quietest version. While the verdict is open you are engaged, because assessing is the activity you enjoy. Once they commit, the file has to close, and closing it feels like being trapped rather than chosen.

The Performer meets a different version of the same wall. You are wanted for the self you built in week 1. So being chosen is not relief, it is exposure, and going cold is easier than being met.

How to check this on yourself, honestly

You cannot sort this out by feel, because the feeling is the thing that is unreliable. Use a record instead. Take your last 4 people, including the short ones, and answer these in writing.

  1. 1What week did the drop happen in? Write the number for each of the 4.
  2. 2What happened in the 7 days before the drop? Look specifically for a message, a plan or a sentence where they became certain.
  3. 3Was there anything new about them at that point, or only something new about their availability? Be strict about the difference.
  4. 4How did you explain it to yourself at the time? Compare the 4 explanations. If they are 4 versions of the same sentence, you have your answer.
  5. 5Who ended each one, and how long did you stay after the drop? Staying 4 months past the drop is its own pattern.

If the drop keeps landing in the same week, and it keeps landing right after a sign of commitment, the variable is not the people. There were 4 of them and 1 of you.

When losing interest is correct information

This is where a lot of advice does real damage, so be careful with yourself here. Losing interest is sometimes accurate, and treating every cooling as a character flaw will keep you in relationships you should leave.

Some honest markers of genuine incompatibility. The interest faded gradually across 6 or 8 weeks rather than dropping in a single week. You can name specific things you learned about them, not just a change in how available they were. The reasons hold up when you write them down and read them a week later.

There is another clean signal. Real incompatibility usually survives their withdrawal. If they cooled off tomorrow and you felt relief rather than a fresh surge of wanting, the assessment was about them.

The pattern version behaves in the opposite direction. It reverses. They pull back, you want them again, and the wanting arrives with a force that has nothing to do with anything you learned. That reversal is the test, and it is close to definitive.

If their withdrawal brings the feeling back, the feeling was never a verdict about them.

One more fair distinction. Sometimes what collapses is not interest but performance. You held a version of yourself for 3 weeks, they liked that version, and the exhaustion of maintaining it reads as boredom. That is worth separating out, because the fix is different.

What to actually do about it

You do not fix this by forcing yourself to stay with somebody you feel nothing for. You fix it by changing what you do in the 2 weeks after the drop.

  1. 1Name the drop out loud to yourself on the day it happens. Say the date and say what preceded it. Unnamed, it will present itself as a conclusion about them.
  2. 2Refuse to decide for 3 weeks after it. Not stay forever. 3 weeks. The pattern needs a fast verdict to survive, and delay is the only thing that starves it.
  3. 3In those 3 weeks, look for evidence rather than feeling. How they handle being inconvenienced. How an argument ends in their hands. What they are like when nothing is at stake.
  4. 4Do one thing that puts you at risk instead of them. Say a true, inconvenient sentence about yourself. The flatness is often the absence of exposure, and you control that side of it.
  5. 5Watch what happens if they cool. If your interest returns the week they get busy, write that down. That single observation is worth more than 6 months of wondering.
  6. 6If after 3 weeks of evidence the answer is still no, leave properly and say why. A clear ending is not a failure. It is the first honest one you may have had.

Notice that none of that is about being more attracted to someone. It is about interrupting a verdict long enough for actual information to arrive.

The uncomfortable frame

Interest that runs on uncertainty is not a flaw in your capacity to love. It is a decision procedure that has never been supervised. It is fast, it is confident, and it has been wrong 4 times in a row.

The good news is narrow but real. You are not incapable of wanting somebody who wants you back. You have been reading a signal wrong, and signals can be re-read once you know which one you are looking at.

Which one is yours is the whole question, and it is the thing introspection is worst at. That is what the Assessment is for.

Find out which one is yours.

The Six Dating Styles Assessment is 24 forced-choice questions and takes about 6 minutes. It names your style, the blind spot underneath it and what that style tends to attract. It is free, it needs no account, and you read the result immediately.
