Time is the wrong unit for this question
Everyone gives you a number. Nobody can tell you what the number is for. Here is what actually has to be true before you date again, and how to tell whether it is.
You have been given a number by now. Somebody said 6 months. Somebody said a year for every 5 years you were together. A friend said you will know, which is the least useful sentence in the language.
None of them can tell you what the waiting is supposed to accomplish. That is the problem with the whole question. Time is a container, not a process. You can sit in 12 months and change nothing, and you can do more real work in 8 weeks than someone else does in 3 years.
So the question has to be replaced before it can be answered. Not how long, but what has to be true.
Why the calendar answer is so popular
A number is comforting because it is checkable. You cannot verify whether you have processed anything. You can verify that it is March.
It also lets everyone off the hook. The friend who says 6 months does not have to tell you the hard thing, which is that they watched you do something specific in the last relationship and they can see you about to do it again. A number is a kindness that costs nothing.
Waiting is not the work. Waiting is the room the work happens in, and plenty of people rent the room and never move in.
There is one place the calendar genuinely matters, and it is worth naming. If you are 4 weeks out of something that lasted 11 years, you are not making decisions yet. You are metabolising. Nothing you conclude about yourself in that window is stable, and nothing you feel about a new person is about them.
The 4 things that actually have to be true
Readiness is not a mood and it is not the absence of sadness. You can be ready and still miss them on a Sunday. These are the conditions that matter, and they are all testable.
- 1You can tell the story without a verdict. Not neutrally, not fondly. Just without the case for the prosecution. If every version ends in who was worse, the story is still doing a job for you.
- 2You can name your own part in one specific sentence. Not 'I wasn't perfect either'. A sentence with a behaviour in it: 'I went quiet for 3 days instead of saying I was hurt.' If you cannot produce that sentence, you will export the behaviour intact.
- 3A quiet evening alone is survivable. Not preferred. Survivable. If your own company is the thing you are escaping, the next person is a job applicant for a role nobody can fill.
- 4You would recognise the pattern if it walked in. You know what the pull felt like last time, in your body, early. You can describe it. That is the only alarm that works, because it goes off in week 2, not month 8.
Notice that none of these are about them and none of them require closure, which is a word that has done enormous damage. Closure is a story you eventually write yourself. Waiting for the other person to hand it to you can take the rest of your life.
The 2 ways people get this wrong
The first is obvious and gets all the attention. You go too early, you meet someone kind and interesting, and you use them as anaesthetic. It is not a moral failure. It is just that the relationship is answering a question you have not finished asking, so it cannot succeed at anything except stopping the pain for 5 months.
The second gets almost no attention and ruins more years. You wait. Then you keep waiting, because waiting is safe and has a respectable name. You call it healing and it is actually a hiding place, and 3 years later you are the same person with a better vocabulary for what happened to you.
The tell for the second one is simple. Ask what would have to happen for you to feel ready. If the answer keeps moving, it was never a threshold.
After a marriage, this is a different question
A 1-year relationship ending is a loss. A 14-year marriage ending is a change of identity, and it is dishonest to treat them with the same arithmetic.
After something long, you are not just recovering. You are finding out who you are when nobody is describing you. You had a role, a routine, a shared account of your own personality, and all of it has been withdrawn at once. Dating into that gap is not dangerous because it is too soon. It is dangerous because you will hand the description job to the first person who volunteers.
So there is one extra condition after a long relationship: you can name 3 things you want that are yours and were not negotiated. Not lofty ones. What you do on a Saturday. What you will not tolerate at dinner. What you actually think about children now, not in 2019.
What to do with the waiting
If time is only a container, the useful question becomes what goes in it. Four things, and they are not restful.
- Write down how the last 3 ended, in that order, and look for the repeated sentence. Not the repeated type of person. The repeated sentence.
- Decide your standards in writing while nobody is charming you. Standards decided in the presence of chemistry are not standards, they are negotiations.
- Practise the thing you avoid, on low stakes. If you go silent when hurt, say one small true inconvenient thing to a friend this week and notice what your body does.
- Go on a first date before you feel ready, and treat it as information rather than an audition. Readiness is partly evidence, and you cannot gather evidence in your living room.
That last one contradicts everything the internet tells you, so it is worth defending. One coffee with a stranger is not a relationship. It is a reading. You find out in 90 minutes whether you can hold your own judgment in the presence of someone appealing, and that is not knowable in the abstract.
The honest answer
Long enough that the next person is not a painkiller. Not so long that avoidance gets to call itself recovery.
You are ready when you can date without needing it to work.
For most people that lands somewhere between 3 months and 2 years, and the range is that wide because the number was never the variable. What varies is whether you spent the time looking at the last relationship or looking at yourself in it.
And there is a harder point underneath all of this. The thing most likely to repeat is not who you pick. It is how you decide — how fast you conclude, what you do with information that contradicts you, what you go quiet about. That behaviour has been the same in every relationship you have had, and it is remarkably hard to see from the inside.
Which means the most useful thing you can do while you wait is not wait. It is find out what you do.
Find out which one is yours.
